CHAPTER 7

The Role of a Yoga

Therapist in Diabetes Care

The role of a yoga therapist is to empower individuals to take responsibility for their health, happiness, and wellbeing through the use of yoga teachings and practices. Empowerment is one part education and one part experiential. Facts only go as far as a person understands them to be real within their own experience. If we are truly to help people transform their health, we also need to know how to transmit the tools in a way that means they can be “directly” experienced. This means the experience never leaves the person because it has awakened a part of them.

In this chapter, we will run through the scope of practice for yoga therapists in diabetes care: what you can do, my main assessment tools and strategies, and I’ll also give you some words of advice that no one outside of the diabetes community will tell you.

Yoga therapy sees each person as a multidimensional system consisting of the body, breath, mind (emotions and intellect), and their mutual interaction.1 The yoga therapist carefully assesses each person within this framework and maps out a path that will serve the individual’s unique needs and goals. It is the role of the yoga therapist to help the practitioner awaken to their sense of personal power, transforming conditioned patterns, and encouraging them to become an equal contributor to their wellbeing. A skilled yoga therapist can see how to create an environment for the inner wisdom to awaken naturally, inspiring patient empowerment and responsibility for the long term.
